Rebecca Gonzales

Rebecca Gonzales

Biography

Rebecca Gonzales was a Filipina film actress who rose to prominence in the 1940s under LVN Pictures, known for her versatility and expressive performances. In Waling-Waling (1948), she portrayed a South Sea maiden opposite Angel Esmeralda, who played a violinist—a role that suited her well due to her beautiful singing voice. The following year, she took on one of her most challenging roles in El Diablo (1949), an LVN production inspired by the legend of Faust, the 16th-century magician who sold his soul to the devil. The story, which also influenced the works of Goethe, Heine, Thomas Mann, and Paul Valéry, as well as the musical compositions of Schumann, Berlioz, Gounod, Boito, and Busoni, demanded emotional and dramatic depth from Gonzales.
